I didn't say this..

"In fact, if success requires so much effort, then maybe failure is easier in the long run and offers different rewards. What kinds of rewards can failure offer us? Failure, perhaps most obviously, allows us to escape the punishing norms that discipline behavior and manage human development with the goal of delivering us from unruly childhoods to orderly and predictable adulthoods. Failure preserves some of the wondrous anarchy of childhood and disturbs the supposedly clean boundaries between adults and children, winners and losers, and while failure certainly comes accompanied by a whole host of negative affects such as disappointment, disillusionment and despair it also provides the opportunity to use these negative affects to poke holes in the toxic positivity of contemporary life."

Sydney VanBESTen pimped my website. Thanks Syd.

ALSO! Remember kids being an art student means you get to make art when the other kids are taking FINALS! Take that sweet unassuming undergrads who tolerate me auditing a class they pay for!

It Grew Back Gray

I have always made abstract sculptures that were about my relationship to specific people. Each sculpture is a window into how I experience an individual. I am never really sure whom the window is for, the person the sculpture is about or me. This sort of self-satisfying engagement with others reminds me of prayer. I used to pray from my friends and family. Prayer was a comforting verbal expression to God, of my gratitude for the people around me. The exchange with God left but the exercise never did. Perhaps that is why these tiny constructions come so naturally to me. I make them because they focus my concentration on someone else for a change and that brings me joy (and relief). I like celebrating the people I love and now I am without a listener. If I have learned anything from my two years in the woods at UConn, it is that sculpture is my language. So these are still prayers, I have just exchanged one language for another.

For John:

For Dan:

Before I believed that Jen would die, she told me about her hair. She showed me pictures of what it was before and I remember thinking it was sort of big. The pictures showed a thirty-something Jen with yellow hair that made me search my mouth for hops.

Jen, in her forties now, told me that the first time cancer took her hair she thought her sex life was ruined. She laughed, sipped her tea, and shifted to tell me a secret. Jen told me that when the cancer took her hair it struck her like a bell and her whole body sang out in protest when her hair grew back gray.

ASPECT-EZ is a new series of events and online projects coordinated by ASPECT to provide support for emerging artists. Strangely Funny is the first installment of ASPECT-EZ, and showcases video, performance and new media artists who incorporate humor and the absurd into their practices.

Originally the word funny was just a derivation of the word fun. Then sometime around 1806, somewhere in the U.S. South, the word also came to denote the strange and the odd. The current definition includes the fun, the facetious, the suspicious, the insolent, and the strange, curious, and odd. Which leads us to the following questions when thinking about a show about funny art; What makes something funny? Can something be too strange to even be considered funny anymore, or too funny to really be considered art? Come see what we found out.

DVDs of the work will be available at the show at a discounted price!

Oh...and this band will be playing at the opening...HELL YES!

Gaga Stigmata

My work has been featured on Gaga Stigmata.

"Gaga Stigmata: Critical Writings and Art About Lady Gaga is a new technological journal that takes seriously the project of shock pop artist Lady Gaga. Unlike other critical and creative journals, Gaga Stigmata moves at the speed of pop."

I am a big fan of the blog and it is super exciting to be a part of Gaga Stigmata.

SUPPORT SYSTEM

On the occasion of the Women’s Conference visit to Long Beach, curator Jeff Rau and Sixpack Projects present Support System, an exhibition of local, national, and international, contemporary women artists responding to concepts of feminine empowerment through mutual encouragement and community building.

SUPPORT SYSTEM
October 16 – December 4, 2010
curated by Jeff Rau
Sixpack Projects at Phantom Galleries Long Beach
170 N. Promenade, Long Beach
OPENING RECEPTION:
Tuesday, October 26, 7-10pm

ABOUT THE EXHIBITION:
Support System presents the work of women artists responding to concepts of feminine empowerment through mutual encouragement and community building. The exhibition title is borrowed from a work by Lynn Aldrich constructed from a collection of bras, anonymously donated by women in the art world – curators, dealers, writers, artists, teachers and students. Playing on the actual function of the undergarments, the quilt focuses attention on this community of women in the arts serving as a support system of another kind.
In a day of multiple and occasionally conflicting feminisms, women artists continue to re-interpret their positions in the world. Through diverse materials and methods, the eight artists included here employ humor, beauty, metaphor and mystery in an exchange of tangents and trajectories. From this dialogue a larger concept emerges, one of nurture and development, where individuals and ideas thrive and affect change when they are confident of the support of a shared community.
